(Interview with Ambassador of Germany in Ukraine on the problem "Ukraine from the sight abroad". )

1. What was Ukraine for you when you saw it for the first time? What did impress you most?
To the moment of Ukraine became an independent state I already had direct relationship with this country. I was one of the rare foreign diplomats who was present on the celebration of Ukraine independence in 1991 in Kyiv.
From that time I started watch the events in this country with great interest. During one and half year of my stay in this country as Ambassador of Federative Republic of Germany I was able to get acquainted with country of transitive period: country full of dynamics and events. This characteristic mainly belongs to economical and public fields.
Especially I am very glad for the Ukrainian generation. It is opened, well-educated, oriented on Europe. For instance Ukrainian youth is very similar to the youth of Berlin, Warsaw or Brussels.
2. Please tell us three reasons to love Ukraine.
Firstly I see friendliness, open soul and mental ballast of people in their every day life. Secondly, being a citizen of this city I every day have a promenade over the city and every day I admire how beautiful becomes it day by day.
The third reason is obvious - mushroom soup and pancakes, as it is know that the way to love lies through stomach.
3. In your opinion what was the reaction for the Ukrainian political events in EU?
I think that crisis in Ukraine is reacted in Europe as it has to be reacted. We consider it a constitutional crisis of young state. I would better tell crisis of "teenager" democracy. European perspectives of Ukraine do not depend on what will be reaction now - positive or negative. And relations between Ukraine and EU now and will depend of current situation in EU. And, secondly, obviously from later development of reforms in Ukraine. This must be a start point. Of course both Euro parliament and Euro commission with some concernment reacted to long terms of crisis in Ukraine, hence relation is pretty warm. |
