Till the end of next year Ukraine plans to finish negotiations about entry into WTO. Russia also has the chance to do the same, but still it needs to try hard, as the journalist from Financial Times Frances Williams writes in the article from 27, July.
Two former Soviet Republics are the hugest in the economical tendency countries that till this time are not members of World Trade Organization, which recently accepted the 151-st member- a tiny island government Tonga located in the Pacific Ocean.
In spite of political situation in the country Ukraine during several last years moves to WTO much faster than Russia does, mostly owing to the "Western" direction of President Viktor Yuschenko who proclaimed membership in WTO and improvement of trading relationship with Euro Union a priority aim for the country.

Consideration of the application submitted by Russia 14 years ago is always stopped due to disputes with USA and EU about the defense of intellectual property and limitations for the import of agricultural goods.
As well official meetings of the working group as for the discussion of conditions of Russian membership were blocked due to position of Georgia, which insists that Russia should stop trading with separatist Georgian provinces Abkhazia and Southern Ossetia, as well should remove a ban for import of Georgian wines and mineral waters.
Not long time ago commissar of EU in the problems of trade Peter Mendelson admitted that "the level of distrust" between Moscow and Brussels reached the level unseen from the times of Cold War.
Nevertheless yesterday Maxim Medvedkov, the head of Russian delegacy on the negotiations as for the entry to WTO, reported:" I hope that if our application will be supported Russia will be able to finish negotiations till the end of this year".
Medvedkov mentioned that Russia already ended two-side negotiations with 50 members of WTO (Euro Union is presented as one country). Now the negotiations with Saudi Arabia last.
The procedure of entry into WTO requires the country-candidate carried out negotiations about access of goods on market with all trading partners who need that, as well as concluded multisided treaty about the mechanism of application of WTO rights and norms.
In multisided negotiations a stumbling block is the problem of agricultural subsidies and sanitarian norms, on which basis Russia banned an import of some of food goods from USA, Poland, Thailand and other countries. |
