Crimea is located in the longitude area of Earth that is located at the equal lengths from equator and North Pole.
On the North the peninsula sides with the land by a narrow (7-23 km) Perekop Isthmus. From the West and South the peninsula is watered by the Black sea, from the East by Kerch strait, and from the North-East waters of Azov sea and its bay Sivash. |
Crimea is located in the geographical center of Prichornomorya. Being connected with Russian valley on the North it moves to the Azov-Black sea basin. From the extreme South cape Sarych to the nearest cape Cerempe only 229 km lie. From the same cape Sarych to the banks of Balkan Peninsula the distance includes about 400 km, and to the shore of the Caucasus a bit more.
From the geological point of view two large different in origin but tightly connected zones mountain-forest and valley-steppe areas are connected. Mountain Crimea is one of the folded creatures of outer Alpine zone possesses a difficult geological-geomorphologic basement that determines a high level of landscape differentiation and intensity of geodynamic processes. Plain Crimea is a part of not-mobile Scythian platform differs by a appropriate simplicity and intensity of geological character and more simple landscape.
The Northern part of the Crimea is presented as a low valley. It slowly rises to the South to 200 m over the sea level. In the Western part the valley is complicated by the row of sub-latitude ridges of Tarkankut height (up to 179 m). On the East the plain transfers into Kerch peninsula (to 189 m), for which the alteration of circle-like limestone crests, mud mounds and adjoining lake hollows.
In the South of the peninsula the Crimean Mountains lie spreading like an arch for 180 km from South-West (from Sevastopol) to North East (to Feodosia). Mountains include three ridges that have typical steep southern slopes and plate Northern plains. The highest one is the Main Crimean ridge has the height of 1545 m (Roman-Kosh Mountain). It combines mostly mountain rocks of Age of Reptiles. Its top plain almost free from forest surface is called yayla. Yayla consists of marble limestone, has karsts form of landscape: here more than 850 caves and wells are located.

Balck and Azov seas make the most Eastern end of the chain of seas that spreads from the Atlantic Ocean. Thus the Crimean peninsula is as if watered by the waters of Atlantics. These seas, even being connected between each other, are not very similar.
 |
Black sea is a pretty deep (to 2245 m) almost closed oval water reservoir. The area of its surface is 413488 km3. This sea has the area in more than 15 times larger than the area of the Crimean peninsula itself.
The Sea of Azov (Azov sea) on the contrary is very shallow. Its largest depth includes 13.5 m. It is also much smaller than the Black sea (37600 km2).
These two reservoirs differ in many other features. The Black sea is more salty (18%), almost unable to be frozen, it contains sulfuretted hydrogen and hasnt life starting from 150-200 m. Azov sea is not so salty (13%), the annual freezing and availability of life in all water levels are observed.
|
The territory of the republic Crimea includes 1657 rivers and temporal currents. Their total length includes 5996 km. Hence the majority of them are small currents that dry in summer time.
Through Northern Crimean channel annually 3.5 mlrd m3 of water are supplied to the peninsula. It helped to increase the watered lands from 34 500 ha (1937) to 400 000 ha (2006).
There are about 50 salty lakes along the sea coast that are used for the salt and curative mud exraction: Sakskoe, Sasyk, Donuzlav, Bakal, Old Lake, Red Lake, Aktashskoe, Chokrakskoe, Uzunlarskoe and others.

White rock in Belogorsk
 |
100-m rock Ak-Kaya (White rock) is a unique memorial of nature, architecture and history of the Crimea. During tens of years water, wind and sun had made fanciful sculptures and caves similar to the castles.
White rock keeps very ancient legends. Here a great many of features of primitive people are found. It is connected with favorable nature conditions, large quantity of different animal species for hunting, availability of caves- nice nature shelters. |
A significant event has happened at Ak-Kay in the period, connected with Crimea getting union with Russia. The staff of A.Suvorov was located here at 1777. And on 10 June 1783 duke Potyomkin on the top of the rock has received an oath for the honesty to a Russian government from the Beys and the Murzes.
Chersonese
 |
This city existed almost for two centuries at the Crimeam coast. It was called Chersonese Tavricheskiy (from the Greek Chersonese- peninsula).
In 422-421 BC it was founded by the Gerakliots whose origin as South (small Asian) city Gerakleya at the bank of the bay that nowadays has the name of Karantinnaya. In one century Chersonese is turned into one of the hugest polices cities governments of Northern Black sea region. It was a slavery republic with democratic form of government. It was a center of trading and culture. Its population reached 20 000 people. |
From V centure B.C Chersonese is in the content of Byzantium Empire. In 988 after 9 month blockade the city (Russian name Korsun) was captured by the prince Volodymyr. Here Volodymyr accepted the Christianity. At the end of XII XIV Chersonese struggled twice from the Tatars attacks. The city stopped the existence at the middle of XV century. Already in 1472 the Genoese council in Kafa (Feodosia) called it one uninhabited place.
Today on its place the Chersonese historical archeological preserve (territory of Sevastopol) was founded. Visiting the museum one can watch the ruins of antique theater the single in our country, city streets, the region of guarding walls with tower of Zenon and many others interesting architecture constructions.
Mountain Mitridat
 |
Like a high dome the Mountain Mitridat rises under Kerch. Two and half thousand years ago the acropolis of the antique Pantikapey the capital of Bosporus kingdom - was situated here. The Mountain was surrounded by walls. Kings palace was located under it. The square with area of about 100 ha went down to the river Pantikapa, current Melek-Chesme. |
From long time ago the excavations have been carried out on Mitridat. The thing that raises the interest of the archeologists mostly is public establishment of the first centuries of our era. The part of the archeological finds is exhibited in Saint Petersburg in the Bosporus hall in Hermitage, the majority in the Kerch historical archaeological museum.
Cave city Bakla

 |
The residues of the cave city Bakla are located to the South-East from the village Skalistoe of Bakhchisaray region.
Bakla is an opened unprotected by the wall medieval settlement that sides with small castle.
The streets are clearly viewed today, the residues of the houses, small chapels. A lot of artificial caves are left everywhere. On the South corner of the rock leading the wide valley the castle was built in the VI century. The guard constructions were made of huge blocks of local limestone. The castle died at the end of XVIII century at the time of Mongol-Tatar attack.
Bakla is a typical sample of medieval feudal complex: castle with adjoining village settlement. |
Kyz-Kule
 |
To the North-West from the cave city Eski-Kermen there is a tower with gates on the next plateau the residues of the castle Kyz-Kule (Girl tower).
Kyz-Kule is a typical medieval castle-fortress. Behind the fortress there was rather shallow ditch. It was possible to cross it through a foot-bridge. Both the bridge and the road were cut in the rock.
The castle Kyz-Kule died from the fire in XIV century. Only a tower together with its poetic legends is left.
In the canyon to the West from Kyz-Kule there also was a settlement in the Middle ages. A small church was sculptured in one of the rocks. Even today this church possesses the fragments of fresco of XII XIV. In literature this church is called the temple of Donators. |
Sudak castle
 |
Everyone has his own favorite places that he appreciates mostly. For us one of them is the Sudak castle. You treat such places not only with love but with some jealousy. You want everyone to see them, approach these walls from rude grey limestone, cross the gates protected by two large towers, threw the sight to the desert slope that hides the unique ruins of trading and handicraft city, rise to the Council castle, and then through the steep path higher and higher to the top of Fortress mountain, to the lonely Patrol tower. |
This castle gives unforgettable impression traditional citadel, fortress inside the fortress. Gloomy courtyard, toothed wall from the castle to the George tower and widely opened to the side of the sea stone square protected by this wall.
|
Resistance and sadness that is the image of citadel that became a shelter for the group of selected, for those who preferred death to the slavery.
Yet in 1312 the ancient chronicler was writing melancholically and simply: from the time of its foundation till today 1100 years pasted. Merely! On this background any bustling seems stupid and impolite.
Surozh, Soldadia, Soldaiya, Sugleya, Sugdak, Sudak different names of one thing city-fortress. Now it is even difficult to believe that there was a time when the Black Sea was called the sea of Surozh, that the Alans, Khazars, Polovtsi, Greek, Russian, Italian, Tatars and Turkish were struggling to death in order to own this sea and port.
|
 |
The city that used to be the mixture of all nations and religions provided the world with traders (the trading staff of Marco Polo was located in Soldadia), warriors (there are legends about warriors of Surozh in the Russian epos), farmers (the wines of Surozh were very famous around the world), builders, travelers and even the saint. The blossoming was so great that even in XVIII century, after Crimea has united with Russia, the capital of Tavria was to be transferred here.
There is a necessity again and again to come back to some places, to recall the history of the centuries, to determine the attitude to them, to read the Latin marks on the plates decorated with the Genoese coat of arms, admire the attractiveness of the towers, wonder the courage and talent of the people who have created it for the centuries near the edge of the rock
Chufut - Kale
 |
Air city that was the name of Chufut Kale named by the contemporary of A.Pushkin. It seems that the houses and walls of this medieval city, similar to eagle nests, are stuck to the slope of the rock, located on the plateau of the mountain. The nature itself has prepared inaccessible building ground, and a human has created a city there fastening a natural protection by the fortress constructions. |
| In XIII the Alans used to live in the fortress the most powerful tribe of the Iran origin. They were occupied with farming and handicraft, traded with neighboring and far away countries. The fruit and grape were grown on the fertile land of adjoining valleys. Hence soon the Tatar army of the Golden Horde captured the fortress; men-warriors were as usual killed, the rest of the people were turned into slaves. |
 |
Having estimated the fortress the first Crimean khan Khandzhy-Girey in XV has turned it into his own protected residence making am effective shelter in the period of struggle of khans with Golden Horde for the independence. After the Crimean khans moved to the new capital Bakhchisaray this place remained the citadel of the capital and the place for imprisonment of noble captives.
 |
In different time in these prisons was imprisoned the Lithuanian ambassador Lez, Polish hetman Pototskiy, favorite of Ivan Grozny Vasiliy Gryaznoy. Three years long the khan ambassadors held in the khan prison.
From that time Chufut-Kale started to lose its inhabitants. The citizens left the plateau and moved to Bakhchisaray, Sympheropol, Yavpatoria. In 1852 the last inhabitants left this place. |

The decision of the gala approach to the church was very wit. There is a nicely decorated entrance to the temple gates in the view of wide arch. There is a grandiose ladder surrounded by the cypresses. Rising over it one can see the whole temple compact, as carved from monolith, decorated with hexahedral hipped roof from the same stone.
Amazing talent of the artist-decorator, ideally stone processing is shown in every quadrate meter of the church facade.
Foros church
Higher than Forors on the lonely Red rock a tender church of Christ Revival is seen. The temple was founded in 1892 according to the project of the architect Academician N.Tschagin. Fresco works were made by the famous workshop of the Italian Antonio Salviatti, and the interior was decorated by the famous artists Makovskiy, Korzukhin and others.
There are several legends about church appearance. It was founded by previous owner of the Foros estate merchant Kuznetsov to the honor of the Emperor Alexander III and his family. In 1922 the church was closed, the crosses were thrown away, pattern was painted over, senior priest was sent to the Siberia. The restaurant was opened in the church, then it was a free storage building, and after the fire in the storage room the church was desolated. Several years ago the reconstruction works have been carried out in the church and again the church service was renewed.

Among the most interesting routs for diving in the Crimea are Martyan cape (unique recreational zone on the territory of Nikita Botanical Garden. Here also the rocks-Camels are located. The instructors feed the swallow-fish here and give the tourists opportunity to feed them by themselves), rocks Adalary in Gurzuf (also will cause an interest in the lovers of archeological diving, as on the bottom of these place one can see the residues and things of Ancient Greek boats), caves of the famous Swallow nest, sunken boat in the area of Yalta passenger port, Ayu-Dah cape, or Bear-Mountains (here is an outstanding dead end grot where only certified divers are allowed to enter ).

To any place you wish to go by bicycle, be it at the Southern part, warm and nice Sea of Azov, steep slopes of Tarhankut or cave-cities of Belbek Valley, we advise to start from Simferopol-city. As everybody knows that all the roads lead to Rome so in our case the road to all the picturesque places of Crimea goes from Simferopol. Besides, in the capital of Crimea you can obtain everything you need for your traveling, and in case of need to repair your iron horse.
Route:Simferopol-Alushta
The problem of cycling in the Southern coast of Crimea is significant drops of surface, low visibility on mountainous serpentines and high population density. The length of the road from Simferopol to Alushta is about 45 km, substantial height drops and considerable functioning capacity of the road show us that this route is not for amateurs. Your road will cross one of the most picturesque roads of Crimea, you will go by real Crimean wood, and sure will evaluate beauty of Mountain Chatyrdag. You will go up the Angarsk Pass admire numerous conglomerations of stones on slides of the ancient volcano. And below after a long descent you will meet sunny city of Alushta and, of course, the very Black Sea. Southern coast, due to complex relief and indented coastline, is divided into a chain of varied routes. And every one of them will realy interest a bicycle rider.
Route:Simferopol-Rybachye
South-eastern coast of Crimea (Large Alushta and Sudak region) - mountains here are somewhat further from the coastline, and wide valleys by the sea are combined with beaches. Due to this you can ride along the beach coast from Rock sanatorium. You can go up along the valleys of Mountain Rivers, for instance, through the famous Ghost Valley. Karabi mountain pasture is the most adorable place in Crimea (it is not far from Rybachye village) - on the territory less than 100 km2 there's just a post of mountain rescuers.
Route:Simferopol-Mangup
If you are interested in the ancient history of Crimea, which has become a native land for many nations, you can ride to ancient cave cities. Mostly they are located pretty close to each other and are around the former Crimean khan capital Bahchisaray. High Mountains, rocks and deep canyons together with steep slopes and attractive valleys create unique landscape. There is a complex of cave-cities in this area.
It is ought to say that this route is less difficult than the previous one, for your way will mostly go along the valley and more or less hilly place. This route is preferable for amateurs because of its simplicity.
Leaving Simferopol toward Bahchisaray and Sevastopol, you should turn behind Bahchisaray to Ternovka village and keep this direction. And after the first turn you will see pleasant green valleys surrounded by low limestone mountains looking like fantastical walls. Soon the road will bring you into tiny Zalesnoye village, after which you can see the panorama of the ancient Mangup.

Today peaceful Balaclava offers both a brilliant quiet life from the military town which transfers into an international tourist center on the Black sea coast. The prices of property in the Crimea keep growing all the time. The most expensive spots are of course in the recreation zones. Firstly, it is the Southern coastline sea coast from Foros to Alushta, including such resorts as Yalta, Simeis, Mishor, Gurzuff, Partenit. Now Yalta takes the second place after Kiev for the price of land. The previous seasons leaders were Tarkhankut and South-East of the peninsula. Now the prices growth is observed along all the coast line. Market even has the propositions about the Razdolnensky region, which earlier was not much paid attention to. Hence the sea there is extremely clean.
The prices on the South-East of the Crimea depend much on the location regarding the sea and highway Sevastopil-Yalta-Alushta. The land in the sea region with subtropical surrounding nature is definitely preferred. The plots near the highway have the advantages of connected communications.
