One of Kyiv’s masterpieces of art, Andriyivska church, is deteriorating quickly because of construction of a new building near its territory.
Director of Sofiya Kyivska reserve in charge of the church Nelia Kukovalska announced the alarm on May 27 after the results of the latest inspection of this 18th century baroque church.
“Here’s our latest achievement: there are new cracks in the marble floor, cracks under the pulpit, even the glass is cracking in the huge windows,” Kukovalska said.
She added the cause of these deteriorations is construction of a new building on Desiatynna street, just close to Andriyivskiy Uzviv, where the church is situated. Kukovalska reported her agency appealed to the municipal authorities a number of times for info on the new building and the developer, to no avail.
She also admitted the reserve has conducted an exclusive research with the support of a scientific institute for building, which concluded that the church’s foundation, basement structures and partly its walls are “unfit for use”.
.”I have written a report to the Building Minister Vasyl Kuybida and asked him to appoint a special session to do with further use of this building,” she mentioned.
She hoped that the nearby session of the ministry due on June 4 approves a plan for reconstruction of the church.
In April the Cabinet has already set aside 12 million of hryvnias for emergency renovation in Andriyivska church.
